Migraine has been linked to depression, and migraine-associated problems increase the difficulty for successful treatment. This makes another reason why you should see us in our Buford GA facility to get relief for your migraine headaches.

Migraine

A migraine is a type of headache that could cause intense throbbing or pulsing in an area of the head and is commonly accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. The excruciating discomfort a migraine gives can last for hours or even days and can be very intense. Migraine headaches happen about 3 times more frequently in women than in men.

It was thought that migraines are created by irregular brain activity that may be triggered by various factors. Yet, the exact chain of events stays unclear. Now, experts consider the cause is associated with genes that control the activity of some brain cells.

Migraine headaches can drastically affect your way of life. Not only you have to stay in bed for days, it may also raise risk of depression.

Depression

Depression is a major medical disorder that includes the brain. It is a lot more than just unhappiness. It does not pass next day or for a couple of days. It remains and affects your day-to-day living. People with depression may go through sadness, loss of interest and pleasure in usual activities, weight changes, trouble sleeping or oversleeping, lack of energy, feelings of worthlessness and thoughts of death or suicide. Women who experience migraine headaches may be more prone to develop depression.

The National Headache Foundation states that individuals with headaches can have psychological problems and that those with depression can also acquire physical problems.

Migraine-Depression Study

Women with migraines are at greater chance of depression than women who have never had migraines.

Researchers noted the risk of depression with 36,154 women who participated in the Women’s Health Study. These women had no depression during the start of the study. They were divided into 4 groups: those with migraine with aura, active migraine with no aura, past history of migraine (but not within recent year), and those with no history of migraine.

During nearly 14 years of review, 3971 women were diagnosed with depression. Results showed that those with history of migraine were 36% more likely to develop depression than those with no history of migraine.

Whether it was migraine with or without aura, analysts believe that the raised risk of depression was the same.

Chiropractic Treatment

Based on American Chiropractic Association, psychological and social issues can raise chronic pain and the other way around. Scientific evidence suggests that nerves in the spinal cord of chronic pain patients undergo anatomical changes, which then can transfer into emotional changes also.

Migraine treatment has to work on finding causative factors and relieving the stresses in the nervous system. Chiropractic care has been revealed to be effective in alleviating migraine headaches.

Chiropractic care can also help with depression. Experts believed that it can be an effect of serotonin imbalance. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that sends out nerve impulses within the brain. Your chiropractor helps reduce pain to damaged nerves within the brain as well as spine.

Seeing your chiropractor in Buford GA in a regular basis can be a good preventive approach for both migraine headaches and depression. So no matter if you’re in a normal healthy state or not, go to your chiropractor to bring out the best of your well-being.
